CHUSMA
CHUSMA is a contemporary physical theatre performance inspired by the traditions of the Spanish Golden Age. The piece follows two travelling actors who, as stowaways, flee the Spanish Inquisition. Their journey leads them through storms and encounters with pirates, transforming survival into a theatrical adventure filled with humour, music, and imagination.
The work emerges from research into the entremeses performed by itinerant theatre companies forced into exile. These short plays reveal a highly visual and adaptable theatrical language developed by artists who travelled from place to place, constantly reinventing their craft to survive. Inspired by this legacy, CHUSMA explores the figure of the wandering performer — suspended between necessity, invention, and play.
Blending physical theatre, clowning, live music, and visual storytelling, the performance creates a poetic and tender world where tension, companionship, and resilience coexist. The relationship between the two characters unfolds through conflict, humour, and mutual dependence, revealing how survival often requires both resistance and care.
CHUSMA celebrates the enduring spirit of travelling artists and the power of theatre to transform uncertainty into creation.
